Most Small Business Websites Feel Generic. Here’s How We Fixed That for TKG Custom Homes.

TKG Custom Homes had the reputation, the reviews, and the work. Their old website didn’t sound like them. Here’s how we rebuilt it to feel like walking a TKG home.

When you’re building custom homes in the Texas Hill Country, word-of-mouth is everything.

TKG Custom Homes already has that nailed. Two decades of builds. 4.9★ on Google with 18 five-star reviews. Voted #1 residential home builder in Guadalupe County 13 years running.

But their old website? It didn’t sound like them. It didn’t feel like walking a TKG home.

It felt like… every other generic builder site on the internet.

This is the problem a lot of local businesses have right now: your brand has a personality, but your website doesn’t.

When we partnered with TKG, the goal was simple: make their site feel like their homes.

The Problem: A Strong Brand Stuck in a Template

TKG isn’t a volume builder. They’re not chasing as many rooftops as possible. They’re building homes people brag about to their friends.

  • 20+ years of custom homes in Central Texas
  • A true “blank page” design approach, not semi-custom catalogs
  • 7+ walkthroughs per build so clients see every critical stage

But none of that was showing up online.

On the old site, you could technically find information:

  • There were photos
  • There were pages
  • There was copy

…but you couldn’t feel the TKG team’s voice. You couldn’t feel what it was like to actually build with them.

If your website could be copy-pasted onto another business with only the logo swapped, that’s a problem.

Our Philosophy: Your Website Should Feel Like Walking Into Your Business

Going into this project, we had one core goal: make the website feel like a TKG home.

That meant:

  • Clean, intentional design (no clutter, no cookie-cutter blocks)
  • Photography that highlights TKG homes, not generic stock images
  • Copy that sounds like how the TKG team actually talks to clients
  • Clear paths for different types of visitors (browsing, ready to build, or just curious)

For TKG, that meant a tone that’s honest, straightforward, confident without bragging, and clearly rooted in the Hill Country — just like the way their team talks to clients in person.

What We Changed for TKG Custom Homes

1. A Homepage That Tells the Right Story in 5 Seconds

When you load the new TKG homepage, you know instantly:

  • They build fully custom homes — starting from a blank page
  • They’ve been doing it in Central Texas for over 20 years
  • They care about what happens behind the walls, not just finishes

We pulled key proof points right into the hero section:

  • “20+ Years Experience”
  • “4.9★ Google Rating (18 reviews)”
  • “#1 residential home builder in Guadalupe County — 13 years running”

If you’re a custom home builder, this is the test: can a stranger look at your homepage for 5 seconds and know whether you’re the right builder for them?

The old site failed that test. The new one passes.

2. Copy That Sounds Like a Real Conversation

We rewrote the site to sound like a conversation you’d have if Steve were walking you through your first meeting.

Instead of generic lines about “quality construction” and “superior craftsmanship,” we focused on how TKG actually works:

  • “We hand you a blank page” instead of “flexible plans”
  • Real talk about allowances and pricing — no bait-and-switch
  • Plain-English explanations of what happens at each stage of the build

The goal isn’t to impress other builders. It’s to make a nervous, excited future homeowner feel taken care of before they even send an inquiry.

3. Showing What Makes Them Different (Without Jargon)

TKG has real differentiators. We just had to surface them clearly:

  • True custom, not semi-custom. Most “custom” builders hand you a catalog. TKG starts from scratch — every wall, every window, every detail is yours.
  • Real pricing, up front. If you say “Thermador appliances,” they include Thermador in the bid. The site now explains this in human terms, so people understand why their bids are honest — not “more expensive.”
  • Built once. Built right. Quality isn’t just countertops and tile. It’s what’s under your feet and behind your walls.

These sections are written for homeowners, not other builders. No fluff, no jargon, just clear reasons why TKG builds differently.

4. A Process Page That Reduces Anxiety

One of the most important pages on the new site is the process walkthrough: “Building Your Dream Home, Step by Step.”

We broke the build into four simple stages:

  1. Budget & Vision — an honest conversation about what’s possible.
  2. Custom Plan Design — working with their designer and decorator from a blank page.
  3. Guided Selections — “tile day, countertop day, cabinet day” instead of decision overload.
  4. Build & Move In — weekly updates, 7+ walkthroughs, and a group chat with the whole team.

Most custom builds fall apart because the process feels overwhelming. This page is there to calm people down before they ever pick up the phone or book a meeting.

5. Social Proof That Actually Feels Real

TKG’s reviews are strong — they just weren’t showcased.

We built a review section that leans into what their clients actually say, like:

“They built our house like they were building it for themselves…”

You can’t fake that kind of line. The site gives it the space it deserves.

Why This Matters for Small Businesses in the Hill Country

You don’t need to be a national brand to have a website with personality.

In fact, if you’re a local business, personality is your unfair advantage.

Big companies can outspend you on ads. They can’t out-you you.

But if your website looks and sounds like everyone else’s, you’re giving that advantage away.

That’s what we fixed for TKG. We didn’t just “refresh a website.” We gave their online presence the same care they put into their homes.

What This Looks Like If We Work Together

If you’re a Hill Country business owner — builder, roofer, pool company, restaurant, service business — here’s what working with us looks like:

  1. We sit down and get to know you. Not just what you do, but how you talk, what you care about, and why your best customers love you.
  2. We rebuild your site around your actual personality. Clean design. Clear copy. Strong visuals. No bloated templates.
  3. We make it work for both humans and search. We care about SEO and how you show up in AI search (ChatGPT, Claude, Google’s AI Overviews) — but we start with people first.

The result: a website that feels like walking into your business on your best day.

Does Your Website Still Feel Like You?

If you’ve looked at your own website recently and thought:

“This doesn’t really feel like us anymore…”

That’s exactly where TKG was before they rebuilt.

If you want a site that finally matches the reputation you’ve spent years building in the real world, send me a message and share your current site. I’ll take a look and tell you — honestly — what’s working and what isn’t.

No pressure. No hard sell. Just an honest conversation about whether your website is doing your brand justice.
