If you’ve been searching for “AI search optimization” or “ChatGPT SEO” lately, you’ve run into a lot of noise. Vendors promise that uploading a special file or adding new code will put your business in AI answers. As a Seguin-based web designer who works with established local businesses, I want to cut through the hype. The reality is simpler, and it will save you time and money.
First, why this matters now. In BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45 percent of consumers said they use AI tools to find local businesses, up from 6 percent the year before. People are asking ChatGPT and other assistants, “Where should I go for [service] in San Antonio?” and acting on the answer.
So what actually gets a business named? It isn’t a secret algorithm. It’s the same groundwork that has always driven local visibility.
The Essentials You Need
For an AI assistant to name you, your online footprint has to be clear, consistent and credible.
- A complete Google Business Profile: Fill it out fully, with accurate categories, services and hours.
- Steady, real reviews: Genuine feedback from real customers is one of the ways search and AI tools judge whether a business is reliable.
- Clear, plain-text service pages: AI tools read text. If your site loads its content with heavy JavaScript, or hides service details inside images, some of them may not see it. Use clear headings and descriptive paragraphs.
- Consistent name, address and phone: They should match exactly across your website, your Google Business Profile and the major directories.
What You Can Skip
Here is the good news: you don’t need to buy a new tool or create a special “AI file.”
Google’s own documentation on AI features says you don’t need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI-generated results. The AI is working from the same public web that people see. If someone asks you to pay for a “ChatGPT optimization package” that means uploading a proprietary file or adding obscure code, be skeptical.
The Bottom Line
AI search isn’t a new discipline. It’s a magnifier of existing quality. If your website is confusing, your reviews are sparse or your contact information doesn’t match, no amount of “AI optimization” will fix that.
I build distinctive, clear websites that tell a business’s story in plain English, and I make sure the technical foundation is solid so AI tools and search engines can read who you are and what you do. I can’t promise any assistant will recommend you, and no honest vendor can.
If you’re curious how your current website reads to AI tools, I’d welcome a discovery conversation. We can review your setup and talk through practical next steps, without the pressure or the hype.
